Today I'm reacting to another fantastic episode of The Computer Chronicles. This one documents "everything you need to know" about building an epic gaming PC...in 2001.

  • I built an Alienware clone system back in 2001. This video really takes me back and yes Black and White was pretty yawn-inducing. I built my first PC after buying a Pacard Bell back in 93. A week after I bought it, it broke. I took it back to Best buy and they told me they would have to send it back to the factory it would take two weeks. I told them forget it and figured out how to fix it myself. After that, I built all my own computers and still do to this day.

  • Absolutely did not appreciate the condescending tone throughout. The people in this video are the pioneers who allowed modern gamers to know what they know. It's like a car enthusiast complaining that the Model T did not have liquid cooling..........

  • U ever heard of quantum processors? They managed to built one, that can solve a math calculation that would took thousands of years on a normal platform in seconds. Now they say, it will only be used in servers, because no normal person would need this processors. Doesn't this sound somehow known? Its not like they said the same as 6 core processors were integrated in servers, right? Right?

  • Bro, I still use Winamp today lol. I was too young back then to really appreciate how far its come though YOOOOO, I actually have one of those 1.7Ghz Pentium 4s! Even for its time it was kinda trash. They run on SDR rather than RDR or DDR, which SDR is really slow even for its time. My 1.7Ghz chip can barely run a game that has recommended requirements well below its speed. I haven't tested it yet, but I'm fairly certain my 800Mhz Pentium 3 that uses RDR would run the game better.

  • A note about what you said about the jump from 500mhz to 1.7ghz in a single generation is a little misleading. We had several iterations of the pentium 3 before we moved on to the 4. I had a P3 1000mhz. I overclocked it to just over 1.1ghz. Another fun thing to note is that the P2 socket was the same style as a dimm slot, and the chip was on an isolated board and slid into the mobo like an SNES cartridge.

  • Buying a computer in '93 meant laying out a lot of cash for a pre-built that wasn't necessarily up to gaming, and neither was Windows.

Edward NeumanEdward Neuman15 hari yang lalu
  • I had an Integraph Z workstation (basically intel based dual processor answer to the silicon graphics machines) back in 1998.. both those machines looked really sharp for the time but it was incredibly hard to find a OEM case you could buy that was good looking back then. If you wanted a good looking machine you were spending thousands upon thousands for a custom workstation.

  • It’s was crazy back than everything changed so fast it was hard to keep up on stuff and everytime you built a top end system it was outdated so fast, I actually got out of the computer field around 2009 didn’t get back into it til 2018 😬 defiantly is a lot better now except for shortages and mining crap going on now

  • I used to have to upgrade every couple years, because you would easily double the performance of your old system sometimes. PC technology has really leveled off especially in the last 10 years.

  • The craziest part is the games aren't too much different looking in 2021. In some cases, the games are now more cartoonish. They put a much bigger emphasis on realism back then, and also sound was very important as you can tell.

  • Kyle, if you want an idea for a video in the future, maybe consider contacting Mr. Cheifet? Seems like the man is elderly, but still with us! Would be awesome to get his take on how computing has changed in recent times compared to back then. While he wasn't a true techie, he did have a lot of interactions with technology through the ages, and it would be cool to hear his take on this era of computing.

  • what I really miss are cheesy advertising lines. Like I got an older PC Case for my new build here and it says "Creating Passion" on the Box. AMAZING! others like "Envisioning Future", they are so dumb and that's what makes them great. sadly I think because too many people realised that these slogans are so dumb they stopped doing it, ruining the fun for everyone... People are so serious now that the friendly mockery back then would turn into blatant outbursts of fury...
