I didn't think I'd be fixing an ALIENWARE PRE-BUILT today

  • tbh i have a problem with the motherboard test, many prebuilts wont have support for K series cpus and wont turn on with them. Also wasnt the 1070 blower card spinning when u turned on the system with all the parts still in place? The motherboard might be the problem, but the test was comprehensive enough to say for sure.

  • I could understand the reason for pre-built's back in the days when it really took some computer know how to put one together. But these days it's really as easy as watching a IDworlds video and popping things into the correct socket and plugging up some wire (well unless you get into some fancy water cooled rig or something). Building a system is no harder than putting together a piece of IKEA furniture.

  • Actually , I cut a piece of cardboard to shape for the back of cheaper GPU's , then cover it with some vinyl film. I like carbon fiber pattern , then just use a double stick piece of tape or 2. I mean , you're not exactly doing pushups on it , and you can cut out vents as you like.

  • Alienware was awesome. Dell bought the logo and the hype. Kept the unique looking cases (part of the Alienware mystique) but, on the inside it’s totally Dell production line. Keeping that profit margin high and trying to stay one step above a Walmart prebuilt. Sucks.

  • prebuild suck, that's a given, but some are far worst than other. HP is over priced, impossible to upgrade, glorified pieces of crap. but Medion is not as bad, sure everything in the case is cheap, but OEM so upgradable. their screens are also surprisingly decent for the price, so as a very first computer, for 500€ with every peripherical included, it's hard to do cheaper.

The psu was an FSP 280w with a 14 pin connector before it died, I replaced it with a Pure Power 11 500w. I got a 500GB WD Blue 3D to use as a boot drive. Now I have a reference GTX 970 for when I rebuild it in a TT H18 Versa. Finally looking like a decent computer to play games on. I wouldn't mind an 8700 and some basic 2666 ram 😏

  • Wow come on man you went from no point in building a whole new system if he only needs a mobo. To now he needs a whole new system because you made the very unwise decision to convinced him to upgrade to a ridiculous cpu that don't match his currents parts. My first dislike.

  • My previous computer was HP and trying to upgrade it only to find out that it was so locked down with OEM bullshit, I said fuck it and built my very first computer myself so that I would never have to deal with any OEM bullshit again. And it cost the same as an HP computer, but was free of bloatware and all this other shit. And my HP was out of date to the point I couldn’t play new games within a few years whereas my current computer can at a similar point in my current build’s lifecycle. And building my own PC inspired me to get A+ certified which I now am. Look at what building things yourself can bring.

I know I’ll need to upgrade my cpu down the road (ordered it with i5 10400) but the dorado board supports much faster cpus. But I sacrificed the cpu to order it with a rtx3070 and a 750w platinum power supply. I figure the cpu and ram will be easier to find when I have the cash

  • 6:06 in so far and I want to guess it's the power source. I was thinking it might be when the fan wasn't spinning though that could have been because the PSU wasn't heating up enough. Even though I have education in IT I don't have enough first hand experience to know if power sources that can detect when it needs cooling automatically exist yet and every power source I've used in the past thus far has the fan boot up immediately. Guessing part of the PSU is busted and can't supply enough power to the GPU anymore. Gunna post a reply to this comment if im wrong after watching the rest of the video.

    • Seems I was wrong though I feel some form of testing should have been done for the PSU anyway to fully rule it out as an issue. Since a majority of the parts were swapped out anyway however its probably a non issue anyway, though I do hope these upgrades were done for free or discussed with David's dad. If I were in his situation unless I was looking to upgrade anyway I would be pretty peeved if a lot of extra crap was thrown in that I had to pay for without my permission. As for the motherboard issue I almost feel that wasn't done properly either due to the uncertainly about which pins to use to start the computer. Its a good idea to document where everything is and also a quick Google search can usually help you find the info you need as well. Editing magic might truly be to blame however. I look forward to more of these videos as I like to try to guess what's wrong before too much in the videonis revealed ^_^
